I’m Vanessa, and this is the story of how I came to practise and share mindfulness. For most of my life, I lived with anxiety and the lingering effects of trauma from my teen years onwards.
Life and various tragic events led me to raise my children as a single parent. Life frequently felt overwhelming, and like many others, I was simply just getting through each day.
Meeting various Buddhist teachers over the years revealed to me that mindfulness is a wonderful tool that helps us pause and find a moment of peace.
Initially, it was just about getting through each moment by paying attention to my breath when panic struck or seeking a sense of calm when life’s noise felt overwhelming. As time went on, it developed into something more meaningful: a way of embracing life with a clearer understanding and more kindness.
I went on to study Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive (MBCT) practices, the science behind mindfulness, Buddhist philosophy and meditation, trauma-sensitive mindfulness, contemplative ecology, somatic movement, Yoga Nidra, breathwork, and mindful art.
These threads have influenced the way I now teach grounded, trauma-sensitive approaches, and always with respect for each person’s experience.
Being trauma-sensitive is very important to me. Traditional mindfulness and some Western ideas can sometimes overlook the needs of those with difficult past experiences. In my classes, I offer choices, build safety, and create space for people to practise in ways that feel supportive rather than overwhelming.
During my training, I received a late diagnosis of being neurodiverse. This helped me understand some of the struggles I faced and led me to start working with and developing a special interest in supporting families and children who are on the spectrum.
The “Earth” in Mind, Body, Earth holds equal significance. Nature and the great outdoors have always been my anchor, and I incorporate this into my classes where I can. Walking outdoors, listening to birdsong, or simply feeling the ground beneath my feet, all these moments provide perspective and remind me that we are part of something greater.
If you decide to work with me, you will experience honesty, warmth, and practical techniques you can bring into your daily routine. Remember, mindfulness isn’t about perfection. It simply needs to be your own.
